FLANNEL

Skills: COLLABORATION

FLANNEL: V DAY TRAILER from Jess Posner on Vimeo.

FLANNEL is an inclusive, bi-monthly women’s event at the Wunderbar queer theatre and bar in Syracuse, NY. Founded by Ariel Servadio in summer of 2019, Posner began co-organizing with Servadio (and a rotating group of others) in Sept 2019 to present Flannel: Coven (October),  Flannel: Happy U-Haulidays (December), and Flannel: V Day (February).

Flannel presents an incredible opportunity to do transformative work within in the queer community. Not only a dance party, Flannel is a community event ripe for social performance and sculptural installation. At the Flannel: Coven edition, I performed a ritual for release and joy with a parking lot full of beautiful queer people–creating a moment of calm and community in a night filled with stimulus. Throughout the night, Scream Queens lead revelers on the dance floor in cathartic screams during a four hour DJ set, performed by DJ Gundz (of Ithaca, NY). Patrons reflected on the transformative and ecstatic nature of the event.

At the Flannel: Happy U-Haulidays event, Posner performs as Consensual Sapphic Santa. She invited guests to sit on her lap for a photo (all photography taken by Andrea Kennedy), and then asked permission to place her hand on their shoulders, or asked them where they want to be touched. This lead to many thoughtful conversations–particularly with younger women–about asking for and expecting others to ask for consent before touch. This generated meaningful exchanges within the context of a nightclub/bar. It was fun, sexy, and consensual.
